Landscape of Awe: MFA Thesis Exhibition 2026

March 7-April 16, 2026

The Master of Fine Arts Thesis Exhibition 2026 features the work of Art Department graduate student artist Becca Osborn. Combining glaze-fired ceramic sculpture with natural elements, Becca Osborn creates an earthy world where hand-crafted rock formations, moss, and fallen branches, all made of ceramics, invite contemplation about life cycles and the natural world.

50 Years of Art at the Zuccaire Gallery

2025 marked a remarkable milestone at the Staller Center for the Arts: the 50th anniversary of the Paul W. Zuccaire Gallery, a space that has championed creativity, innovation, and artistic explorations for half a century. Since its founding, the Gallery has served as a vibrant space for exhibitions that bring together artists, students, faculty and the larger community, while fostering dialogue, experimentation and innovation in the visual arts. Archival photographs, catalogs, posters, and video displays highlight the Gallery’s history – its bold ideas, boundary-pushing artists, and 50 years of artistic creativity at Stony Brook University.

Faculty Artist Spotlight: Toby Buonagurio & Martin Levine

January 22 - February 26, 2026

The Zuccaire Gallery’s second Faculty Artist Spotlight features the work of longtime Stony Brook University Art Department faculty members Toby Buonagurio and Martin Levine. A ceramicist, Professor Buonagurio has been teaching at Stony Brook for 50 years. Embracing whimsy and popular culture, her vibrant ceramic sculpture has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States, France, Japan, the Netherlands, Germany, Taiwan, and Macao, and has been  acquired by several important collections. Professor Martin Levine, recently retired after teaching for 39 years and now a Toll Professor, creates intricate prints, primarily in etching and lithography, depicting realistically rendered cityscapes. His work has been shown in numerous international exhibitions and is in numerous significant public and private collections.

WEAVING WORDS, WEAVING WORLDS: The Power of Indigenous Language in Contemporary Art 2025

July 17-November 22, 2025

Weaving Words, Weaving Worlds brings together the powerful connection between Indigenous languages and contemporary art. The group exhibition highlights the significance of language revitalization and preservation through the creative expressions of Shinnecock and nation wide Indigenous artists. Work in traditional and new media explore how art can become a vessel for cultural continuity, storytelling and the reclamation of Indigenous languages.

GESTURES & CLUSTERS: Two Collaborative Soundscapes

November 2, 2024 - February 19, 2025

 

GESTURES & CLUSTERS is an immersive installation of two self-running sound art works: Gestures/Murmurations, a collaborative work by John Driscoll and Cecilia Lopez, and Cluster Fields, a collaboration between John Driscoll and Phil Edelstein. Both works stem from the artists’ extensive multidisciplinary backgrounds in electronic music composition and performance, as well as the development of unique instruments, computer software, robotics, sculpture and installation. Original sound scores are created using custom sculptural loudspeakers (including 55-gallon metal drums, plastic pipes, fishing poles, large mica wings and robotic rotating speakers), hundreds of sound files and software for focused sound localization and distribution.

Each sound installation is specifically tuned to take advantage of the architectural resonances and acoustics of the large open exhibition spaces of the Zuccaire Gallery, while allowing individuals to experience their own soundscapes as they navigate the spaces.

Nicole Cohen: Super Vision

July 18 - October 18, 2024

NICOLE COHEN: SUPER VISION features videos and photo-collages that explore perception as viewed through interior spaces and architectural environments. Cohen’s work often overlays past and present imagery, including vintage magazine pages, domestic interiors, period rooms, historical paintings and iconic architectural spaces, to comment on socially constructed space. Using video to transform and alter interior spaces, she delves into ideas of perception, surveillance and the physical experience of immersion. Her work is positioned at the crossroads of contemporary reality, personal fantasy and altered spaces.

Revisiting 5+1

November 10, 2022 - March 31, 2023

Revisiting 5+1 is a reflection on the historic 1969 Stony Brook University exhibition entitled 5+1. Revisiting 5+1 features work by the original six artists, all of whom were Black men, with an addition of six Black women artists, all trailblazers at a time when their work in abstraction was challenged by both the mainstream art world and Black art institutions. Photographs and archival materials exhibited alongside the work provide additional contextual history from this era of student protests and racial justice on campus.

Katy Siegel, Distinguished Professor and Eugene V. and Clare E. Thaw Endowed Chair in Modern American Art, and Karen Levitov, Director and Curator of the Paul W. Zuccaire Gallery,  served as advisors to the project, with significant support from Georgia LaMair Tomczak, Public Programs Manager of the Paul W. Zuccaire Gallery.

Connecting the Drops: The Power of Water  is a group exhibition focused on environmental justice and the vital importance of water. The exhibition presents seven women artists whose work addresses topics such as the Shinnecocks' historical ties to water and oyster farming, community access to clean water, carbon absorption by the oceans, glacial melting, and the social impact of climate change.

Mis/Communication: Language and Power in Contemporary Art  features video, sculpture, drawing, and interactive media artworks by contemporary artists who explore the power of language in a cultural context. Artwork by mostly young and emerging artists examines issues such as the global predominance of English and the societal tendency to censure other languages, dialects and linguistic practices.

Printing Solidarity: Tricontinental Graphics from Cuba

December 1, 2021- March 12, 2022

Printing Solidarity: Tricontinental Graphics from Cuba is an exhibition of global printed matter published in the 1960s-80s by the Organization of Solidarity with the Peoples of Africa, Asia, and Latin America (OSPAAAL), a cultural organization of artists and designers founded in 1966 in Havana. Presenting over 50 archival posters and magazines with strikingly colorful and geometric designs, Printing Solidarity offers a glimpse into the revolutionary aesthetics and agenda of this print collective.

Printing Solidarity was curated by Stony Brook University Art History PhD students Elise Armani, Amy Kahng, Daniel Menzo, and Sarah Myers, under the guidance of Assistant Professor Sohl Lee. The exhibition was produced by the Zuccaire Gallery in collaboration with the Interference Archive, a volunteer-based non-for-profit organization in Brooklyn, NY.

ARTISTS AS INNOVATORS featured works by 22 NYFA/NYSCA Artist Fellows including Elia Alba, Dawoud Bey, Sanford Biggers, Ross Bleckner, Chitra Ganesh, Faith Ringgold, Dread Scott, Shinique Smith, and Fred Wilson. ICONICITY

January 26-February 23, 2019

ICONICITY brings together contemporary artworks that examine the concept, construction, and mythology of the icon. The artists in the exhibition explore ideas ranging from the connection between Medieval devotional iconography and emojis to the religious fervor of technology. Guest curated by Munich-based artist and curator Gretta Louw, the exhibition includes video, software and net art, textile art, and digital prints by nine international artists and artist groups.

Race, Love and Labor

September 12 – October 21, 2017

Featuring photographs by over twenty artists of color from the artist-in-residency at the Center for Photography at Woodstock (CPW).

Since 1999, over 100 artists of color working in the photographic arts have created vital images during their residencies at CPW, forming a corpus that captures the shifting currents of contemporary photographic practices. The exhibition is curated by Sarah Lewis, an acclaimed author, art historian, and assistant professor at Harvard University. "It is impossible to separate the history of photography from the history of labor, love, and race in America... A critical function of photography, through a vast range of aesthetics, is the labor of becoming and the work it entails—on the land and within our inner worlds," says Lewis.

Rolling Point: A Project by Emily Beattie & Eric Gunther

July 18-29 and August 28-September 1, 2017

Dancer Emily Beattie and media artist Eric Gunther team up to create an interactive film installation called ROLLING POINT. Multiple large projections create an immersive environment exploring the resonance between our bodies and the bodies we watch on screen. Through interactive technology, visitors’ movements are linked with the movements of a dancer on film. An electroacoustic soundscape swells as visitors move with the film.

ANTIFORM: Packer, Patrick and Ros

January 24 – February 18, 2017

An exhibition by three experimental New York artists: Lindsay Packer, Mitch Patrick and John Ros. The artists create work that relates viewers to their physical, perceptual and digital environments, often in response to the site of the installation itself. The exhibition's title, ANTIFORM, is borrowed from an art movement of the late 1960s in which artists' interest shifted from strict Minimalist forms to materials and processes, including chance. With a nod to the earlier generation, the contemporary artists in ANTIFORM move away from pure sculpture toward analog and digital work with an interest in everyday materials, process and perception.

Not Ready to Make Nice: Guerrilla Girls in the Artworld and Beyond

Not Ready to Make Nice, a major presentation of the Guerrilla Girls, illuminates and contextualizes the important historical and ongoing work of these highly original, provocative and influential artists who champion feminism and social change. The Guerrilla Girls have been powerfully and consistently active since first breaking onto the art scene in 1985. Appearing only in gorilla masks and assuming the names of dead women artists, the activist group has remained anonymous for nearly three decades while revealing shocking truths about sexism and prejudice in the artworld and beyond.

The cover art on a record album grabs our attention visually and provides an emotional connection to the music we love. Album covers with original designs first appeared in 1938 and have become as much of an artistic statement as the music itself. Covers by renowned graphic designers, photographers and artists have won Grammy awards for their artistic designs and have a lasting impact on their fans.
